This one is dedicated to my mother. She’s the most funny person I know, the best cook in the world and she makes me laugh when I need it! Even though she hasn’t had the most easy life, she still sees the best in every day and is always cheery and happy. And I always need to call her every day, even if it’s just for 5 minutes. She’s my best friend and I love her to bits. When I’m old I want to be just like her – as cheery, happy and funny as she is. And the best cook and pizza maker too!
Vandaag draag ik deze post op aan mijn mama. De grappigste vrouw die ik ken, de beste kokkin in de wereld (naar mijn smaakpapillen) en ik lig altijd in een deuk met haar, ze kan me doen lachen als ik het eigenlijk niet wil maar het toch nodig heb. Ook al heeft ze niet altijd een even gemakkelijk leven gehad, ze ziet toch in elke dag het beste, ze maakt overal het beste van en ze is altijd opgewekt. En ik…ik moet elke dag eens gebeld hebben met haar, ook al is het maar voor vijf minuutjes. Ze is mijn beste vriendin en ik zie ze doodgraag. Wanneer ik later oud ben (hihi) wil ik net zoals mijn moeder zijn – even vrolijk, opgewekt en grappig als zij. En natuurlijk ook de beste kokkin en pizza bakker als zij!
A while ago I heard of the trend “urban farming”, where people start growing, harvesting, processing and distributing their own grown veggies in or around a village, city or town. Then I saw something on tv: De Moestuin volgens Wim (the vegetable garden according to Wim) on Belgian TV channel Vier. The guy was talking about how easy it is to grow your own food, even if you haven’t that much place. You could even grow your own potatoes in an old plastic bag of potting soil! Just plant them (watch here how to), wait 100 days and tadaaaa… there you have your new potatoes! I thought that was amazing! You don’t need a big patio or a giant back yard for this!
Since I’m all about plants and green these days, I thought it would be a great idea to have our own little veggie garden too. How rewarding and cheap when you finally harvest your own vegetables! So two weeks ago we were shopping with my mom in a garden center where we spotted this wooden square (it’s exactly 1 square meter) that you had to build up yourself at home and fill it with earth and vegetables. So we immediately went crazy for it and voilaaaa, since then we’ve got our own little garden.
We planted red cabbage, broccoli, red spicy peppers, leek, zucchini, lettuce and fennel. And even a few hanging strawberries that we can hopefully eat soon. How fun would that be? I just can’t wait for my veggies to grow big and yummy!!

Een tijdje geleden hoorde ik van de trend “urban farming” waarbij mensen starten met eigen groentjes te kweken, te verwerken en te verdelen in hun eigen dorp, stad of gemeente. Een trend die ik nog een tijdje later oppikte van een tv-programma op Vier “De Moestuin volgens Wim“. Die zei daarin dat je écht niet veel terras of tuin hoeft te hebben om je eigen moestuin te starten. Een oude plastieken zak waarin ooit potgrond zat, kan je perfect gebruiken om bijvoorbeeld aardappelen te planten (kijk even hier hoe je het precies doet). Je wacht simpelweg 100 dagen en voilà: “nief patatten”. Zalig vond ik dat! Dus wilde ik wel eens zelf uitproberen of dat bij ons ook zou lukken. Zo onze eigen groenten kweken en ze oogsten. Goedkoop én lekker, twee vliegen in een klap. Moeilijk zag dat er echt niet uit op Vier…
Twee weken geleden liepen mijn moeder, mijn man en ik rond in een tuincenter en plots zagen we daar zo’n moestuin-DIY-kit. We kregen de nodige uitleg van een mevrouw daar die ons ook al wees op zoveel mensen die tegenwoordig terug beginnen met zelf hun groentjes te kweken. En het leek ons gemakkelijk: al wat we nog moesten doen was zakken potgrond in de bak te gooien na hem in elkaar gestoken te hebben. Easy peasy! Een uurtje liggen woelen met je handen in vuile grond, planten en dan het resultaat bewonderen – het geeft toch voldoening.
Voor alle curieuzeneuzemosterdpotten onder jullie: we staken er snijselder in, hete pepertjes, broccoli, venkel, sla, courgette en prei. Een hele boterham dus, of ‘t is te zeggen… een pot soep! En hier en daar hebben we zelfs wat afhangende aardbeien geplant – hopelijk kunnen we er binnenkort gauw van snoepen.

Today is Q-day!! Holland is partying away until the wee little hours of morning as they’re now celebrating their new King Willem-Alexander and his wife Maximà and saying farewell to their Queen Beatrix. Everyone is going crazy. Since there is still a little Dutch blood running through my veins (my grandmother was Dutch), I’ll definitely want to party along with the people in the Netherlands! And I’m planning to go and check out the festivities after work.
Every street of every Holland town and city is coloring orange now, especially in Amsterdam, so I’m also joining the famous orange craze. I wish everyone of my Dutch friends and family a wonderful Queensday (or maybe King’s Day would be better from now on)!
Tromgeroffel…. Het feest is losgebarsten bij onze noorderburen! Holland gaat door zijn dak en viert zijn laatste Koninginnedag met Koningin Beatrix (nu opnieuw prinses Beatrix) én zijn eerste Koningdag met de kroning van Koning- Willem-Alexander en zijn mooie vrouw Maximà! Beatrix heeft zonet troonsafstand gedaan en geeft de fakkel door aan haar oudste zoon. Elke straat in elk dorpje of stad is waarschijnlijk nu wel oranje gekleurd, dus ik ga lekker eventjes mee in de oranjegekte.
Waarschijnlijk omdat er nog een kwartje Hollands bloed door mijn aderen stroomt, wil ik graag morgenavond een keertje richting Nederland trekken om mee feest te vieren. Het lijkt me leuk, de sfeer zal er alleszins goed in zitten! Daarom ook deze leuke oranje-collage! Ik trek alvast mijn dansschoenen aan en ik wens iedereen van mijn Nederlandse vrienden en familie een fantastische K(r)oningsdag toe, want Koninginnedag is vanaf morgen niet meer van toepassing… Feest ze!
